Laid Back Chickens

Apparently we have some laid back chickens. The boys were out with me for target practice the other day, where I had to chase the darn birds off the shooting range 3 times! Today I see they are completely fine with 5 deer visiting.
Well, at least the deer were down here. 3 does and 2 young. Soon it will be time for fence work. Need the ground to firm up a bit more.

Spring Seedlings

Growing season is well on it's way.

The heat table is filled to capacity and I've had to move the more cold tolerant seedlings down onto the ground. Most of the greenhouse beds are now planted, they have 5 types of head lettuce, radishes, spinach, turnip, beets, carrots, 3 types of kale and more. Our early tomatoes are now potted up and at least 300 seeds of varied veggies are being started daily.

The boys had a great time sowing the melons and cucumbers on Wednesday as they were easier to hold being a larger seed. Plus I'm sure the thought of summer watermelon was urging them on. Anthony and Navarre were also as excited as I was to start our edible flowers.

With all these beautiful plants growing it was very stressful dealing with this week's temperatures. During the day both ends of the greenhouse needed to be wide open otherwise the temperature soared above 30 degrees Celcius. Nighttime temperatures dipped well past zero. We lost some plants on Monday and then Wednesday morning had me very concerned at what I would find under the row covers after the major frost. Thankfully there was limited damage and we've resown the ones we have lost so those ones will be set back just a few weeks on the schedule.

Spring is here.

"Mom, We Need To Save Them!"

This past Saturday it was raining like crazy. The boys and I had just arrived in Halifax and were about to make a run for it. Rain jackets on, hoods up, stuffies and bags ready. Count of 3, let's go!
Navarre took off like a shot for the front door. I ran to the trunk, grabbed the last bag and was about to follow when I saw Anthony still next to the car. "Honey, c'mon let's GO!!!"
"I can't Mom. We need to save them!"
"What?"
"A worm"
"Are you kidding me?"
"Mom, you know they will die on the pavement if we don't get them back on the soil."
Staring at my son I went from feeling incredulous to an amazed and proud Mommy. "Okay, let's get this done."
We picked up about 15 worms and put them far back on the lawn. Huge smiles from Anthony.
Interesting fact is worms don't drown. They can survive in water. The reason they come out of the ground when it rains, is that it's humid enough that they can without drying out. The problem is they are blind so can't find their way back to the soil if they crawl out onto the pavement. I've been saving worms since I was little. Now my guys are too. Happy Mommy
